Hello and welcome! I’m Bonny Shilton, an intuitive energy painter based in Trumbull County, Ohio.

Ohio abstract artist Bonny Shilton with her painting, SpiritMaking art lets me express who I am. And sharing it lets me know if other people can relate. Art helps us connect to our tribe. Sometimes in person. Sometimes through the ethers.

My passion for interior design began when I started working in my father’s upholstery shop at age seventeen. Painting is an extension of this passion, and my paintings work with design styles from rustic to modern.

During the pandemic I focused on abstract painting and studied it through studio work and classes, including online classes from the Museum of Modern Art. Today, I paint large abstract paintings, nature settings, and Asian-inspired brush and ink pieces for interior designers and private buyers.

Chiclets are my new collection of 12-inch square abstract paintings. You can combine them into a gallery wall that fits your space and color palette.

They’re called Chiclets because they remind me of that colorful chewing gum from the past. They’re square and cute and little. You can play with them like I did with Chiclets chewing gum as a kid.

Back then I’d group the Chiclets, and M&Ms, too, by color. And then make shapes and designs out of them. (We didn’t have video games! 😮)

You can do the same thing with these Chiclets in your home. Use these little paintings to design your own unique wall arrangement, perfect for your space.

Each Chiclet is a stand-alone work of art. But combine two or more, and that’s when the magic happens.

The Making of “Colorful Journey”

The Colorful Journey Painting Is Almost Finished — Just In Time For Spring! 🎉 🥂 🎶

It’s bitter cold here in Ohio, minus four degrees some nights, and I’m longing for warm weather. May the sunny colors in this painting bring warmer days for all of us!

The painting is nearly done, but there’s a small tear at the bottom of the canvas that needs repaired before I can actually complete it. I hope to pull it all together in the coming week. 🤞

I started this painting a few years ago, but didn’t love how it was coming along.  So I decided to paint over most of it and let some of the original painting peek through. The colors are similar, but the original composition was made up only of squares. This new painting is softer and prettier than the first one.

Here’s how the canvas looked as the overpainting began. That S-shaped line you see is the charcoal sketch for the new composition.

Working the paint in layers like this creates depth, texture, and interest.

It’s also a reminder of how the past layers of our lives shape our present, a theme I return to again and again.

Creating this painting has been a colorful journey in itself. The painting moved with me from Virginia to Ohio and, like me, was transformed during the process.

Stay tuned! I’ll let you know when Colorful Journey is complete and ready for its new home.

Don’t Miss the Sixth Annual Holiday Trees at TAG! 🎄 🎁 ❄️

If you’re looking for one-of-a-kind gifts, handmade by local artists, Holiday Trees at TAG is where you’ll find them.

This year, the fundraiser for the TAG gift shop includes a tree raffle, an ornament basket raffle, and a gift certificate raffle. I’ll be contributing a framed piece of art for the raffle.

My art will be available for purchase in the gift shop (see below), so come on over and find the perfect gift for your loved ones or yourself.
